Johnathan Buma is accused of sharing sensitive files, internal documents, and text messages with various associates, reportedly as part of a book he was writing about his experiences in the bureau, as revealed in court documents filed on Tuesday, March 18, in New York.

He was arrested at JFK Airport in Queens on Monday, March 17.

Authorities claim that starting in October 2023, Buma printed approximately 130 files from the FBI’s internal system, some of which contained clear warnings about their confidential nature.

While the investigation into Buma reportedly began under the Biden administration, multiple news outlets indicate that the FBI had already conducted a raid on his home in late 2023.

Buma, a resident of California, has been vocal about his concerns regarding the Trump administration’s handling of classified documents. He became an FBI agent in 2008.

Court documents also suggest that Buma raised alarms regarding FBI investigative methods through congressional testimony, media interviews, and reports to governmental bodies.
